I spent some time on the NCI website and found it to be very large, but easy to navigate and locate information one needs to research. I went specifically to find information on two respective cancers - oral and thyroid. The sites contained myriad information on the cancers, well organized and easy to read and understand.
- In the treatment section they separate information into patient and health professional sections making it easier for a patient or caregiver to locate information specific to their interest and needs.
- Specific words are underlined to be able to be clicked on for definition. A valuable resource indeed.
- For the recently diagnosed patient, the information would be easy to read and understand, and helpful in understanding some of the basics of their situation. Much of what I read was information that my doctors shared with my wife and I, thus for the times when I/we left our appointments a bit confused as to the information provided due to our state of mind, (feeling overwhelmed), this site would have been a valuable source to visit and refresh ourselves on most questions we might have gone away with. Good source of educatinal material.
- Information specific to the cancer itself - it's origin, spread, etc., again well written and understandable. Good use of graphics to help understand certain information - ie cancer tumor sizes, etc.
- The publication area is a good source of easily obtainable information for patient and caregiver.
- In post treatment, I am very much in to support group and patient advocacy participation. I found support group information, but it is not prominantly displayed for those who need to know this resource exists.
- Most cancer patients, I would think are keenly interested in nutritional information to help get through treatments and certainly for recovery and in to life beyond treatments. I found some information on health and nutrition, but again had to locate and I would think this would be another area that should be prominantly displayed.
- Cancer Topics page is well organized, but no information on health, nutrition and survivorship topics. Cancer is not only about understanding the disease, drugs, treatments and surgery - it is also so much about health, nutrition, emotional and spiritual health and well being. I would have liked to see more information on these vital aspects of enduring the cancer journey - recovery - survivorship, for patient, caregiver and family.
Overall, this is a great website offering much very valuable information. My first experience with it and a site that I will spend more time with as my recovery progresses.
